Lucy Discovers The World's Tiniest Snake On Kansas City's Westside

Yeah - see that tiny little squiggle between Lucy's front paws. No kidding - that's a snake. Dead snake, but still a snake. If my phone had the zoom feature, I would've used it. Okay, in all honesty, Lucy didn't find it. I did. She was not curious, intrigued or amused that we'd spent any amount of time stopped and not in forward motion. Lola, who was even less amused was off camera pining for the kids in the school yard. This is one of my favorite parts of my job - every single day, and more accurately, every half-hour I'm in a new place. I may have been there just yesterday, but when 24 hours pass, a lot can change in the same place. I bet that snake wasn't there yesterday. I can see the same dogs and cats, day in and day out, and every day, every hour, every minute for some is different. So, in this moment I indulged MY curiosity about that tiny snake. I poked it with a stick to see if it was really dead. Poke....Poke. Yep, it was dead. Then we were off, headed down the alley just a block from their house. Lots of good things live (or in the snakes case die) in alleys. We continued indulging their curiosities. Mostly thats things that are things unseen by the human eye, and unsmelled by the human nose. When they pull vigorously in the direction of an invisible object or walk mad, crazy circles for no apparent reason zig zagging back and forth, I believe them. I believe there is something there. And when they come to a screeching halt, shove their face to the ground, and wiggle their noses as fast as they know how, and maybe, just maybe if it's REALLY good, stick their tongue out every so slightly for tiny taste, it's as though they are saying, "See, I TOLD you there was something here, and boy is it good!"
